No Tears

The Doctor and Amy were sitting in the control room. Rory wasn't there – he had a job, and told them not to wait for him. So they went out, just alone, the Raggedy Man and his little Amelia Pond. They had a great day: eating ice cream on a planet where every flavour was available what you could imagine. He knew how much she liked ice cream, and they met so rare, he wanted to give her something what she surely liked. And she did, she was like a kid in the candyshop. He had to wait at least an hour till she could choose. And, she choose vanilla and avokado. Flavours you can taste on every planet – well, every planet where they know ice cream and vanilla and avokado. Which wasn't very rare but wasn't common as well.

So they sat in the control room eating their ice cream and chatting cheerly.

'Can I taste yours?' asked the ginger.

'Nno, I told you to choose something more interesting but you are stuck in your habits. It's my ice cream!' He protested.

'Please, Doctor, just a lick! I never tasted – what they call it?' she frowned.

'Lelembra. It's lelembra. Nationat fruit of the Seventh Galaxy Empire. A bit crabby but sweet enough. Like stawberries. No, not strawberries, forget strawberries. Like... well, there's no friut on Earth like lelembra.'

'Then let me taste it. C'mon, Doctor, aren't you just allergic to humans?' she joked.

'Of course I'm not! How could be anybody allergic to humans?!' He said scornfully.

'Oh just a lick!' She looked at him with her puppy-eyes. He sighed. How could she achieve every time what she wanted?! Well, she was Amy Pond, wasn't she?

'Oh right. But I can tell you you are very high-pressure!'

'I know.' she smiled and tasted his ice cream.

'Mmm.' she said. 'It's delicious! Can I have an other lick?' She blinked at him again with those pleasing eyes. He sighed annoyed.

'Take it. I'll eat yours.'

'Thank you.' She chirped and took his dessert. He murmured annoyed and licked her ice cream.

'You know we could do this more often.' She said while licking her ice cream satisfied. 'Just you and me, something normal to do. Hm?' She asked not facing him.. She was busy with her ice cream.

'Really? Do you think Rory wouldn't mind?' He frowned.

'Rory?!' She popped. 'Why would he mind? I'll always go back to him.'

'Yeah...' He said thoughtfully. 'But you know... What he thought all the time... That you and me...' He blushed.

'Don't be stupid old man!' she elbowed him. He let out a little 'ouch' and smiled at her. 'He knows you are my best friend but he is whom I'm in love with.'

'I'm sure he knows. But you humans and your jealousy... How could anybody know?...' He wondered. She laughed at him.

'So you were never jealous... let's see... on River?' She narrowed her eyes with a smile.

'Oi! You woman!' He blushed and pointed at her hastily but with the rapid move the ice cream falled on his throusers. 'Oh great. Look at it. What have you done?!' He said annoyed. She laughed heartily.

'Hey! Stop laughing! It's not funny!' He shouted.

'Oh it's quite funny if you see it from the outside.' She said laughing. 'Oi, let me.' She pulled her handkerchief out from her pocket and wiped the icy thing off from his throusers. He looked at her annoyed and murmured.

'See? It's all right.' she smiled.

'No it's not alright. You can't ask questions like this. It's not fair.'

She laughed again.

'What's? Ask about River?' She frowned.

'Yeah! I mean no. Yes. No!' He said angrily. She amused very well. 'You can't ask questions about River like this!' He said.

'Why not? I can tell you I was jealous on Rory a many times.'

'What? Rory?' He frowned.

'Yeah you stupid! Of course I was. Even though I knew I had no point to be. But I was. That prooves you're in love with someone. That you can't bear to think about loosing him. And just because of this you fear someone takes him from you. Do you understand now?'

His face was wondering. Was he ever jealous on River? Should he be jealous on her? He knew he has definietly no point in it. She loved him. Loved him till her last breath.

He shook and looked at the ginger woman. She looked worried.

'What's the matter, Doctor?' She asked.

'Nothing. Nothing at all.' He smiled. 'I was just thinking about River. I think I've never been jealous on her...' He said with a little sadness in his voice. Did it mean he did not love her enough?

'Ah, you've been lucky. I guess you were born that way.' She waved her hand.

'Why? You just told me you know you are in love when you are jealous.' He frowned at her.

'Yeah and I ment it but it doesn't mean you can't be in love if you haven't been jealous ever. I just said jealousy prooves you're in love.'

She looked at him and saw the fright in his eyes.

'Oh stop it! You love her, you know it!' She punched him and smiled but her smile was a bit fake. She was afraid he did not know what he felt. River was her daughter. If he didn't know what he felt for her, she would kill him if he played games with her. Didn't matter he was her best friend.

He looked down and shook his head.

'I've never thought about it. Not really.' He lifted his head and looked into her eyes deeply. 'Of course I loved that woman. But she didn't hear my prayers...' He was talking to himself now. Amy frowned hard.

'What do you mean on 'she did not hear your prayers? What do you mean on 'loved'?' She asked with angst. He lifted his head but did not look at her.

'You will understand. I know you will.' He said weakly.

'What? What will I understand?' She asked now frightened. He sighed so deeply she couldn't think anything but that he would say something dreadly. And she was right.

'Amy, my little Amelia.' He began. He grabbed her hand and looked at her. 'You will understand. You waited fourteen years for me, then fourty again – even when you can't remember it now. You faced Daleks in your mind. You saved worlds and spaceships and you've had angels in your head but you defeated them. You know what means to travel with me. You understand death as well.' He said and looked into her eyes. She nodded slowly. She knew it was more than about her.

'You bore a girl although you didn't know you was pregnant. And she'd been marvellous. She became River. She became my wife...' He stopped and looked away from her. 'But I've known her from much further. I knew her before you. Before I could had a glance who she was...' he swallowed hardly. '… she died. She died in front of me. And I couldn't save her.'

She froze. She pulled her hands back and shook her head. Her eyes were on him and looked so horrored he couldn't bear it. He looked away and heard her stammering.

'No... No... No that's not possible. No!' She jumped up and shouted now. 'No! You are lying!'

He tried to catch her hand but she jumped back from him.

'No! Don't touch me, not with a finger! No! You let her die!' She was sobbing hysterically. He stood up and neared her. 'Don't move a step further!' She cried at him. 'Don't even move! You let her die! My daughter! My Melody! My River! No!' she backed.

'Amy I am so so so sorry...' He whispered.

'Don't say you're sorry! Don't even speak a word! You let my little girl die! You didn't save her! I hate you!' She was sobbing so hard he couldn't reach a word to her.

'Amy...' He tried again.

'No!' She shouted and ran out through the door. She did not so much as mind to slam it. She ran through the field not minding where she was going. He looked after her and leaned against the door. He squeezed his eyes and felt a tear coming down on his cheek. He let the ones go whom he loved more than everything. Once in the Library the woman he loved with love, and now the woman whom he loved as his mother and sister and best friend along the whole universe. He felt stupid and so bad... He closed the door softly and sat back on the steps. He cried silently.

And that moment he heard a soft voice from the direction of the time-rotor.

'No tears, my dear. No tears for the life that you've led. All the things that you've seen, all the things that could have been. Well, I've been everything I want to be. So no tears. No tears for me.'

He jumped on his feet. It was a voice he knew. Yes. It was the voice of her. Her River. But she seemed so weak – so dead... He brushed the thought aside and looked around tensely.

'Hello?' His voice was weak. 'Hello, is there anyone?' He tried again. He heard a small laugh.

'Of course there is. Hello Sweetie.' he heard. But no appearance, not a body, just a voice.

'River, is that you?' He asked confused. He heard the giggle again.

'Yes, Sweetie, who else would it be?'

'Where are you, River? What did you hear?' He worried. If she heard she would die... He did not know what he would do then.

'I'm here. Everywhere. To be specific, I'm in a database in the Library where you saved me long time ago. But I'm here. I'm always here to you. And I always hear you. And I always listen.'

A pale form appeared in the control room. It was a face he knew so well. Her face. Her face as she was in the Library.

'Hello Sweetie.' She said again. 'Now you can see me too. CAL made me a favour – I don't know how to pay it back – and gave a little more energy to create a stable-ish form for me. This one time. Never again.'

He hurried to her and put his arm around her.

'I'm so so sorry River...' he sobbed. 'I'm so so so sorry. You did not let me help. I watched you dying in front of me and I couldn't help. I'm so sorry River!'

She held him tight and shushed in his ears.

'It's not your fault, darling. I was who knocked you out, it was my choise. It's not your fault.'

She smoothed his hair and pushed him back to look into his watery eyes.

'Now hush. Save your tears for those who are left behind. You know mother will come back. Just tell her it was my choise. It was my choise to save you. And – if I haven't, I would've not been born, 'cause she would've not meet you. Fixed points can't be rewritten. Not by marrying someone,' she smiled merrily 'not every time. So tell her I loved her. And tell her I will love her forever.' her form began to fail. 'And I love you my dear, with all my hearts.'

'No.' He whispered. 'No, River, don't go!' He grabbed in her fading form. 'Don't you dare going!' He wept but lowered his hand. 'Not again...'

'I'm not going anywhere.' He heard her voice fading. 'I'm always here to you my love. I'm always here.' He heard the voice whispering and fading in the silence. He stood there: lonely and frightened like a lost child in a supermarket, looking for his mummy to take him home. He just stood there and his tears rolled down on his face. And then he jumped.

'So you're still here?' He heard the ginger's voice at the door.

'Yes. Here. Always.' He stammered and tried to wipe the tears from his face.

'You've been crying.' She stated. She stepped in and closed the door gently.

'No.' He protested. But when she sighed he admitted. 'Yes.'

'Tell me. Tell me how it happened.' She sat down on the steps. He sighed and sat down next to her. He bowed his head and began.

'I was young. Younger, I mean. It wasn't this face yet. I travelled with a woman called Donna. I got a message on my psychic paper: I need you in the Library. Hurry! xx it said. You can tell who it sent.' He smiled a bit. She smiled too. 'So I went.' he continued. 'And Donna with me. And we realized that the Library was closed – for ninety years. And then suddenly the lights went off. And I realized we wasn't alone. The Library was full of the Vashta Nerada, a species who go with the darkness, hunting usually in small hordes, in forest. But they were there – they were everywhere. We ran.' She smiled at him. She knew that part. 'And then suddenly they got in. Professor Song and her friends. She greeted me as usually: 'Hello Sweetie.' and I just answered 'Get out!'. I wish they would've done. But no, they stayed. We realized the people who were in the Library on the day it closed itself were saved in the data bank. I had to save them - but the hunt started. The Vashta Nerada ate all of them, our friends, one by one. Only River and me and one other left at the end. I teleported Donna back on the TARDIS – well I thought on the TARDIS, but the computer sent her in the memory bank. And the other guy worked on saving the download of the people. But I knew the memory bank had no enough hosting to complete the download. So I decided to connect my brain on it, so the people could be safe.'

'It could be dangerous.' She interrupted.

'No. It was deadly.' He sighed.

'What do you mean on...'

'She took my part!' He cut her off. 'I did not die because she knocked me off and handcluffed me to something. I couldn't reach the sonic either. I had to watch her dying instead of me.'

He was crying again. She sighed and smoothed his shoulder.

'She knew my name...' He whispered. 'I did not trust her and she whispered my name in my ears to proof herself. And she told things I couldn't understand. She loved me even when I did not know her...'

He turned to face the ginger. He looked so broken, so sad... She hugged him.

'I understand. I understand Doctor, although I can't believe that's happened to my little girl... To River, who had been always so strong... My little daughter...' She sobbed now softly. He smoothed he hair and sobbed with her.

After a couple of minuits they calmed. He let her go and bowed his head again. She looked in the distance and wiped her tears off her cheeks.

'What did you do?' She asked finally. He looked up.

'Nothing. I went home that night and tried to understand her sacrifice.'

'Did you? Could you?'

'No. Not till I fell in love with her.'

'Do you understand now? Do you understand now how strong somebody's love can be? Do you understand now the jealousy?'

He looked at her and nodded slowly.

'Yes. I understand now everything. And I would sacrifice myself for her existence gladly.'

'That was what she did. For you.'

'Yes...' He sighed.

'Just do for me something.'

'Everything, my dear Amelia.' He faked a smile.

'Don't tell Rory. Please. Let him think we'll be family forever. Just keep his peace.' She asked. He nodded and watched her standing up.

'And now: bring me home. There's a husband waiting for me in the 21th century Earth. Don't let him wait. He waited enough for me.'

He smiled a bit and stood up. Now he faced Amy and put his hands on her shoulders.

'You know she loved you. And she will love you forever.' he said.

'Yes. I know. And I will love her forever too. And you will love her too. Don't you dare to forget her.' she smiled.

'Oh Amelia Pond! How could I forget her?! The daughter of the girl who waited. She is my wife. She will be forever.' He hugged her then stepped to the consol.

'So, 21th century Earth, husband, eh?' He grinned.

'Yes please. And don't be late. Don't be late any seconds or I'll kill you before Rory could.' she said seriously.

'Right, boss.' He saluted and started to pilot his beloved old blue box.
