'Why can't you behave normal?' River shouted at him.
'Why? Why?! Maybe because I'm not normal. Do I look normal to you? Hm? Amy?' he turned to his ginger companion who was sitting on the stairs listening to the argument with the less noise as possible. She stirred at the sudden attention she got and started to gawp but the Doctor turned away immediately – back to River.
'See? She thinks as I do.'
'Yes, I can see.' River rolled her eyes. 'And I agree on that that you aren't normal. You are insane. You broke the queen's sancred vase! What did you think?!'
'I did not mean!' the Doctor protested. 'I hadn't realized it was there at all!'
'No, you just ran over the room, knocking things over, caring nothing! Of course she got furious!'
'Don't you say it was my fault she sent her army on us!'
'What if I do?' she pulled her eyebrows.
'What?!' he shouted back at her. She stepped back, put in the coordinates and pulled the dematerialization arm. The TARDIS did her usual noise and then took off.
'What are you doing?!' the Doctor shouted and stepped to the consol.
'Going back to Stormcage. Maybe someday we will meet and maybe talk and not just speak. Look for me when you calmed yourself.' she said hard and stepped to the door.
'Amy, take care of you, and of this idiot here.'
The ginger nodded and River stepped outside the blue box. The Doctor did not mind to turn his head towards her.
When she was gone, he stepped to the consol.
'So where now? The Eagle nebula, or one of the lovely planets of the Orion constellation? On the Mintaka III they make blue coffee which tastes like mangoos and chicken together. Heh?'
Amy's look was telling.
'Alright, no blue coffee. On the Alnitak VII. is a tree high as...'
'Doctor.' the girl interrupted.
'Hah?'
'What the hell was coming on you?' she frowned. He looked surprised.
'What are you talking about?' he asked frowning.
'Oh don't play the stupid to me, I know you too well to disguise me.'
'Amy...'
'Why in seven skies did you argue with her? She was definitely right!'
'Right?! It wasn't my fault! The queen was mad, I barely touched that vase!'
'You pushed it over.' she crossed her arms.
'No I did not!'
'Oh come on Doctor, why do you deny it? It's over, we are all alive, it was fun in a way.'
'The woman attacked me!'
'The queen had the right to execute us, as you told me before...'
'No, not the queen, that woman.'
'Oh, River?' she realized. He nodded silently. 'She just wanted to warn you to be a bit more cautious. She fears for you.'
'Of course she doesn't. Why would she?'
Amy sighed and rolled her eyes.
'It's obvious, you just don't want to see it.'
'See what?' the Doctor frowned. The girl rolled her eyes again.
'Spoilers, or what keeps she telling about things you don't have to know.'
He snorted and whispered 'spoilers' with disgust. It was the word he hated to hear. Of course he knew what he didn't want to see, it was just he didn't want to know it, so hided from himself.
'Right. Then choose something to go to and we'll be off.'
She rolled her eyes again and stepped down from the stairs.
'I don't know. Choose you.'
'Alright.' he said coldly and tiped some coordinates. The TARDIS shook and they were on the Gaddon.
'Nice place, lovely people, agreeable clima. Let's go and take a look.'
And so they went and explored the tiny planet, which wasn't bigger than Mexico either. They didn't have to run, the place was calm as the ocean on a clear sunny day. That's why the Doctor got bored soon.
'Let's go, Amy, I need something to do.'
The girl frowned.
'You are doing something.'
'Walking around in a garden between crimson trees and purple grass. It isn't something to do.'
'I like it here. You can go and do something but I stay.'
He rolled his eyes but walked on with her. In the evening, when even Amy get bored by the gardens and towns and people, they got backwards to the TARDIS.
'Good night, Doctor.' she said when they finally stood in the control room.
'Sleep well, Pond.' he faked a smile and went on with pushing buttons. The ginger sighed and turned to climb the stairs to her room. The Doctor put in the coordinates nervously. He did not know what to expect. Not after a day like that.
The noise of the TARDIS hummed familiar in the empty corridor of the jalehouse. The storm raged as ever, the lightnings were common in every minuit. However, it never disturbed her hearing. The materialization-sound was clear as the black night. The door opened with the familiar squeak. She lifted her head and looked towards the blue box but did not stand up. The Doctor stepped out with a hard expression on his face. She smiled a bit but did not move to greet him.
'I'm not calling for a second chance, you have to understand.'
The smile diasppeared from her face but she nodded silently.
'Give me a reason.' He stepped closer to the bars. River sighed and bowed her head before lifting it again and answering.
'I'll give you a choise.' she said kindly.
'No. Don't give me a choise. Give me a reason but don't give me choise. I won't take it.'
She sighed deeply and bowed her face again.
'You know I can't. The reasons you must look for yourself.'
'But I can't handle a choise, you must know that.' his voice softened a bit. She laughed a bit.
'Oh yes I know. I just thought... No. You would laugh at me.'
'I won't, I promise.' he sat down on his heels before the bars.
'Oh, there are no promises you keep.' she laughed bitterly. He bowed his head. First time he realized she was right. There was no promise he kept.
'I lost the track that lost me...'
'But this is not the end!' she squatted facing him. 'There is no place you cannot go. Your mind is muddy right now but you'll understand things later, I swear. Don't cut yourself. Just go on with your stuff, go and save planets and people and things which are worth. Be yourself and don't let it bother you.' she reached for his face and smoothed it. He pulled back and frowned but then let her touch him.
'Who are you, River Song?' he asked searching her eyes. She sighed and faked a smile.
'You'll understand soon, my love.' she said and pulled back her hand. He stood up and put his hands in his pocket.
'Then, see you around, Doctor Song.' he started to pace back to the TARDIS. She looked after him hopeless, tears in her eyes. Then suddenly he stopped and slowly turned around. He cleaned his troath and tigged the ground with his feet.
'I cannot sleep for a while. Not because of you,' he added hurriedly 'something I cannot name. Just a feeling, I don't know... I wonder where did I go wrong...'
She smiled and stood up slowly.
'Your did not go wrong.' she said softly. He nodded, his head bowed still, and stepped back to the bars.
'May I... I mean... When I can't fell asleep... May I...'
'You come whenever you want, often as you want.' she smiled with joy. 'When you are happy and when your hearts are heavy, when the stars born and fade out: I am blessed when I see you, whatever you come from. My Doctor...'
A single tear fell from her eye. The Doctor lifted his head to meet her eyes – and saw nothing just love in them.
'Don't cry, please. I don't deserve crying either.'
She sniffed and shook her head.
'You deserve more than you would ever dare to imagine.' she said with a sad smile. 'And one day you will understand that I would do anything to see you happy. Keep in mind.'
The Doctor slowly nodded and let a smile for her. Then slowly he turned and walked back to the TARDIS. River stood there, holding the bars and letting her tears fall. Tears of sadness and joy both. He opened the door and give her a last glance and then stepped in. And the blue box disappeared but she stood there for a while, wondering about that gorgeous man who was so difficult – yet so worth to solve.
